Peony Chinese Lantern

The Selective Heritage of Marianna Uspenskaya

The 'Chinese Lantern' (Kitayskiy Fonarik) peony stands as a notable achievement in the Russian breeding tradition. Developed by Marianna Sergeevna Uspenskaya, a breeder who dedicated her career to herbaceous peonies at the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences, this variety reflects a commitment to climate-adapted plants that retain high ornamental value and structural resilience.

Variety Profile

Unlike commercial hybrids aimed primarily at the cut-flower market, the 'Chinese Lantern' was engineered specifically for landscape design. Its structural integrity ensures the bush maintains its shape throughout the entire growing season, which is essential for private garden arrangements and public park plantings.

• Origin: Russian selection (Originator: M. S. Uspenskaya).
• Primary Use: Garden decor and structural grouping in landscape design.
• Reputation: Highly regarded among collectors and landscape designers for its reliable performance and distinct aesthetic.

Even as the global market is saturated with Dutch and American varieties, 'Chinese Lantern' remains a significant staple in the domestic catalog, proving that regional selection can compete successfully through resilience and seamless integration into the natural garden environment.
