Peony 300 YEARS OF BOTANICAL GARDEN OF MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY PEONY

Botanical Heritage: The Tree Peony Architecture

The variety '300 LET BOT SADU MGU' is a product of advanced breeding research conducted by the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production. The plant's biology relies on the classic architecture of tree peonies, which requires a precise approach to skeletal branch development. Unlike herbaceous species, this hybrid produces woody stems that do not die back in winter, making the structural integrity of the crown a critical factor for winter hardiness.

Biological Features and Functional Growth

• Bush Architecture: High branching intensity promotes balanced sap flow and the development of large, robust flower buds.
• Generative Nodes: Buds are set on the tips of the previous year's shoots, necessitating protection against early spring frosts to maintain full blooming potential.
• Root System: Characterized by high regenerative capacity, a hallmark of Marianna Uspenskaya’s selection, ensuring efficient nutrient uptake even in heavy loam soils provided there is adequate drainage.

The practical value of this variety lies in the synergy between frost resistance, adapted to temperate climates, and the ornamental characteristics of elite tree peonies. In terms of maintenance, it is vital to note that woody stems require only moderate pruning for sanitary purposes, as blooming is entirely dependent on the survival of the previous year's growth. Utilizing this hybrid in landscape design allows for the creation of focal point groupings that maintain aesthetic appeal throughout the growing season thanks to their vigorous and dense foliage.
