JAPANESE MOTIFS

The Japanese peony (Paeonia japonica) is a herbaceous perennial that grows on some islands in northern Japan. The plant is distinguished by its early blooming in April-May, when pure white cup-shaped flowers open. The peony leaves are slightly leathery, hairless, and lanceolate, giving the bush a neat and compact appearance. Peonies prefer partial shade or full shade and thrive in fertile clay-loam soils enriched with humus. Planting is recommended in autumn, while transplanting and bush division can be done starting from the third or fourth year of age. Blooming usually occurs on the third year after planting. The Japanese-type peony variety is characterized by a bush height of about 100-105 cm and dark green leaves. The flower stalks are very strong and straight, with each capable of producing 4 to 6 flowers, of which 2-3 bloom simultaneously. The flowers are large, with a diameter of 16-18 cm, featuring a red hue with a lilac tint, while the petals lighten towards the edges. The stamens are yellow, and the pistil is raspberry-colored. The blooming period is moderate in duration but long-lasting, about 11-12 days, and abundant, accompanied by a strong pleasant aroma. The variety is resistant to diseases and pests, making it an excellent choice for landscaping and cutting in various regions. The Japanese peony is not only decorative but also low-maintenance, allowing it to be used in garden design to create striking compositions. However, it is not suitable for bouquets as the flowers wilt quickly. Thanks to its resilience and attractive appearance, this peony will become a wonderful garden ornament, especially in shady areas where other plants may struggle.
