CONKLOCK

The Conklock pear is a tree of medium to above-average growth strength with a high-pyramidal crown that becomes wide-pyramidal with age. This plant is low-maintenance regarding soil conditions and has good winter hardiness. The variety blooms mid-early, and fruiting occurs early – on forest pear trees in the 5th–6th year, and on quince in the 4th year after planting. The variety is prone to self-pollination, but to increase yield, pollinators such as Bère de Giffard, Williams, Bosc Bère, and others are recommended. The fruits are practically not affected by scab, which significantly eases tree care.

Conklock pear fruits are of medium size – from 130 to 150 grams; on young trees and quince, they can reach 180–240 grams. The fruit shape is elongated-pear-shaped, with a thin but tough light-yellow skin, sometimes with a slight orange tan and numerous rust-colored spots and blotches. The flesh is yellowish-pink, turning yellow when overripe, juicy, tender, melting in the mouth, with a pleasant sweet taste and a slight acidity, as well as a distinct aroma. The variety belongs to the autumn maturation period – fruits reach maturity at the end of September and can be stored in the refrigerator until January without losing their high taste qualities. Fruit transportability is satisfactory.

The main advantages of the variety are early entry into fruiting, high yield, and excellent fruit taste qualities. However, fruits are not always uniform in mass and do not differ in high external decorativeness. For successful cultivation, it is recommended to provide trees with a well-lit location, moist but not waterlogged soil, and a suitable temperature regime.
