Onion Spheros

Stability and Yield Potential: Spheros

The 'Spheros' onion from Rijk Zwaan serves as a benchmark for how Dutch breeding expertise focuses on commercial efficiency. In the long-day onion segment, this hybrid acts as a 'reliable performer' where result predictability outweighs extreme short-term records.

Why Professionals Choose Spheros

The core competitive advantage of this hybrid is the combination of bulb uniformity and exceptional storability. In a market demanding produce that maintains marketability well into late spring, Spheros's ability to be stored for 6–8 months without losing firmness makes it indispensable for operations targeting delayed sales.

• Efficient Mechanized Harvesting. The dense, bronze-yellow outer scales are not only attractive to consumers but also provide robust protection during machine harvesting. This significantly lowers damage rates during sorting and transportation.
• Geometric Excellence. With its round shape and a weight range of 160–250 grams, this hybrid is perfect for mesh packaging and supermarket retail. It fits the 'standard caliber' requirement, avoiding the need for complex adjustments to packaging line settings.
• Agronomic Versatility. The recommended density of 0.8–1 million plants per hectare allows growers to adjust planting patterns based on soil fertility while consistently producing market-sized bulbs.

Key Considerations

Spheros is a mid-to-late maturing hybrid (115–120 days). It requires careful irrigation and nutrient management during the peak bulb-filling phase. Neglecting field protocols, especially late-season overwatering, can negatively impact long-term storage shelf life. This hybrid performs best for growers equipped with irrigation systems and professional storage facilities with active ventilation.

Unlike early-maturing varieties, Spheros is not intended for 'field-to-market' quick sales. Its true value manifests during the winter months, when the supply of high-quality storage onions on the market decreases, allowing for better pricing power for growers with quality stock.
