Onion Giant

Consistent greens production: growing the Ispolin bunching onion

For professional growers focusing on a continuous supply of green onions, the Ispolin variety by the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production (VNIISSOK) is a time-tested choice. It prioritizes practical yield and structural integrity over aesthetic trends, making it a reliable workhorse for both small farms and commercial greenhouses.

Field Performance

Unlike more demanding varieties, Ispolin stands out due to its excellent resistance to lodging. Its leaves are thick, dark green, and covered with a natural waxy bloom, which acts as a protective layer against harsh spring winds and temperature fluctuations. For an agronomist, this translates to predictability: the foliage remains intact and succulent, even when water management faces minor challenges.

Agronomic Insights

• Hardiness: The variety exhibits exceptional winter hardiness in open-field conditions. It is one of the first to restart growth as soon as the snow melts, allowing for an early entry into the market.
• Regrowth Rate: After harvesting, the plant recovers rapidly. With a consistent nitrogen fertilization schedule, growers can successfully harvest 2-3 crops per season without compromising the quality of the greens.
• Disease Resistance: Compared to many imported hybrids, Ispolin shows lower susceptibility to downy mildew, which helps reduce the overall need for fungicide applications.

When managing Ispolin, keep in mind that its high production capacity requires well-prepared, nutrient-rich soil. While it may develop slower in heavy clay soils, proper ground preparation ensures high profitability. When provided with regular irrigation, the resulting leaves are tender and free from coarse fibers—a critical factor for wholesale and retail marketability. This variety is built for those who value efficiency, durability, and a reliable harvest cycle throughout the season.
