The onion variety 'Golden Chieftain' was developed at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Crop Selection and Seed Production (VNIISСОК). The variety is included in the State Register of Selection Achievements of the Russian Federation, approved for use in the VOLGO-VIETSKY (4), CENTRAL-CHEMOSOY (5), MID-VOLGA (7), WEST-SIBERIAN (10) and EAST-SIBERIAN (11) regions of Russia, intended for growing onion sets sown in early spring and in autumn (annual crop) and through seedlings (biennial crop).
Bulbs weighing 55-100 g, round, shape index 0.9-1.1. Color of dry outer scales golden. Bulb dense, number of buds 2-3. The variety is low-clump, 1-2 bulbs per clump. Mid-early maturing — 79-105 days, yield 40-45 t/ha. Bulb has a semi-sharp taste, contains 13-14% dry matter, 10-12% sugars, good storability. The variety is of universal purpose.
The seed plant usually has 2-3 erect flower stems 75-90 cm tall, with bulbils 2.0-2.5 cm thick. Color of leaves and flower stems green with medium waxy coating.
Moderately resistant to peronosporosis, suitable for mechanized cultivation and harvest.
