Alfavit onion represents a variety of Japanese leek, a subspecies intended for one-year cultivation in open ground across all regions of Russia. This mid-season variety reaches technical maturity 55–60 days after germination. The plant is characterized by a powerful stem of medium height with densely located blue-green leaves possessing a delicate semi-sharp taste. The mass of one plant is 50–60 grams, which indicates the high yield of the variety.

Alfavit onion is distinguished by high hardiness and can well withstand temperature fluctuations in early spring and late autumn, making it especially popular for cultivation in cold areas. This variety has a false stem with a weakly expressed bulb, and to form a powerful, blanched false stem-"leg" it is recommended to hill the plant as it grows.
