Snow Queen is a giant miscanthus variety specially adapted to the climatic and soil conditions of Ukraine. It is grown as a perennial energy crop for the production of biofuel, and can also be used as raw material for cellulose, biogas, eco-friendly construction materials, compost, and feed additives.
Key characteristics: dry biomass yield reaches 20–25 tons per hectare, dry matter content is about 82 %, and calorific value is approximately 5 kWh/kg (18 MJ/kg). Water content in the stems does not exceed 15 %, making the material suitable for burning without excessive greenhouse gas emissions. Cellulose content ranges from 64–71 %. The plant can reach a height of over 4 m, and the stem diameter up to 2 cm.
Miscanthus 'Snow Queen' is particularly valuable for its ability to clean soil from heavy metals, pesticides, and radionuclides, as well as absorb organic fertilizers over decades. It grows on marginal, low-yield plots where traditional crops lead to erosion, so its planting helps stabilize soil and prevent slope degradation.
Care for the crop is simple: it requires fertilization only about once every five years. Rhizomes are used for vegetative propagation; after planting, they sprout in April, and growth ends in autumn. Harvest is conducted from December to March. Specialized techniques are used for planting, ensuring a density of about 18,500 rhizomes per hectare.
Thus, 'Snow Queen' represents a multifunctional and environmentally friendly agricultural crop capable of providing a stable energy flow and improving soil conditions in low-productivity regions.
