Miscanthus is a perennial ornamental grass from the panicle family, valued for its bright autumn leaf coloration and lush flowers. The plant can reach a height of 0.8 to 2 meters, has upright stems and leaves ranging from 0.5 to 1.8 cm in length with a thick central rib. During autumn, the leaves change shades – yellow, brown, burgundy, and red, creating picturesque contrasts.
Flowering occurs from August to October. The inflorescences are fan-shaped plumes that can be pinkish, reddish-brown, silver, or cream-white. After collecting the flowers, the stems can be used as mulch: they retain moisture in the soil and suppress weed growth.
Miscanthus is distinguished by its high resistance to adverse conditions: it is hardy, withstands strong winds, drought, and urban air pollution. It prefers sunny and semi-shaded locations but can grow on various soil types – from sand to heavy clay. Due to its decorative qualities, it is often used in landscape design: as borders, prairie scheme elements, lawn islands, or individual plantings to create accents.
Among popular varieties, options such as "Ballerina", "Red Chief", "Yakushima Dwarf" and others can be highlighted. Each differs in height, leaf coloration, and flowering time, allowing the plant to be selected for specific design tasks. Miscanthus does not require frequent care: after collecting the flowers, the stems are left in the garden, continuing to decorate the space even in winter, protecting the root system.
