Svetloyar is a type of Allium fistulosum (Welsh onion) specifically bred for the southern conditions of Western Siberia. It belongs to perennial wild edible onion species, characterized by high productivity and excellent taste qualities. The variety is noted for its high yield of green leaves and seeds, as well as good hardiness, making it particularly valuable for regions with harsh climatic conditions.
Breeding work on the Svetloyar variety was conducted from 2008 to 2018 in the forest-steppe conditions of the Priobye region of Altai Krai and at the West Siberian Vegetable Experimental Station. During the research, eight germplasm samples of Allium fistulosum were studied, of which sample No. 72 showed the best economic traits and leaf quality. This sample was included in the breeding program and, after multiple clonal selection and analytical selection, became the basis for the new variety.
Based on the results of tests from 2017-2018, the Svetloyar variety outperformed the standard Green variety by 13.5% in marketable yield, with a seed yield of 0.23 t/ha compared to 0.19 t/ha for the standard. The variety successfully passed state variety testing and was registered, confirming its adaptability and efficiency for cultivation in Western Siberia. Svetloyar combines high productivity, quality taste properties, and resistance to adverse conditions, making it a promising choice for vegetable growers in the region.
