The Benjamin onion is a high-yielding variety of shalot, characterized by early maturity and high cold hardiness. The bulbs of this variety are small, weighing from 25 to 50 grams, with a dense structure and excellent storage qualities. The bulb coloration varies from purple to white, while dry scales have a yellow hue, and the fleshy scales are white. From 5 to 8 bulbs form in one bulbil, ensuring high yield of both greens and bulbs. The plant forms numerous leaves with a cylindrical shape and a waxy coating, as well as up to 20 scapes up to 50-60 cm in height with small whitish flowers. The leaves are thin and cylindrical-sickle-shaped, the scapes are even, without swelling. The Benjamin onion has a longer dormancy period compared to bulb onions, which contributes to its resistance to unfavorable conditions and allows storing bulbs at temperatures from -10 to -15 °C without damage. The variety is recommended for growing in biennial culture from bulbils, especially in central regions. It is characterized by a semi-sharp taste and high maturity, reaching 94% before harvest and 100% after maturation. The average green yield is about 2.62 kg per square meter, and the bulbs — 2.52 kg per square meter. Thanks to its qualities and early maturity, the Benjamin onion is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking an early and stable shalot harvest.
