Lettuce Onyx

Dutch breeding for professional standards

The «Onyx» lettuce variety from Nunhems is a product of long-term efforts by Dutch breeders aiming to establish a benchmark for intensive vegetable production. Classified as a Lollo Biondo type, this variety has secured a strong position in the early-harvest market, ensuring efficient land turnover in both open-field and greenhouse environments.

Agronomic Strengths

The primary development focus for this variety was stability under challenging environmental conditions. One of the greatest hurdles in lettuce cultivation is high susceptibility to fungal pathogens, yet «Onyx» demonstrates robust resistance to downy mildew (peronospora), which significantly reduces the need for pesticide intervention. Furthermore, the Nunhems breeding program addressed pest pressure, specifically leaf aphids, allowing for the preservation of the rosette's marketability without the need for excessive chemical treatments.

Key Harvest Characteristics

• Plant Type: Lollo Biondo.
• Visual profile: Distinctive, vibrant light-green leaf color.
• Growth habit: Firm, well-structured rosette of medium weight.
• Growing cycle: Early maturity.

Due to its specialized genetics, this variety is highly suitable for continuous, large-scale production. Growers appreciate its predictability; the rosette develops uniformly, minimizing cull rates during harvest. The reputation of Nunhems as a global leader in vegetable breeding guarantees seed vigor and crop homogeneity, which are critical factors for achieving high-quality commercial lettuce yields at scale.
