Lettuce Opal

Growing Opal Butterhead Lettuce: Operational Insights

For growers focusing on commercial production, the Opal variety offers a balance of reliability and manageable growth stages. Developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production, this cultivar is well-suited for temperate climates, providing a predictable output that minimizes production risks.

Cultivation and Handling

Opal belongs to the butterhead (oil) lettuce category, characterized by its tender leaves and compact head formation. The medium maturation timeframe allows for effective production scheduling, helping farmers streamline their harvest cycles. Its light-green foliage retains its market appeal under standard growing conditions, which significantly reduces waste during the grading and packing process.

• Plant Characteristics: Butterhead type; forms medium-sized, dense heads that are easy to process and package for retail distribution.
• Maintenance: Requires consistent irrigation during the head-filling stage to maintain optimal texture and prevent bitterness.
• Operational Efficiency: High crop uniformity simplifies labor-intensive tasks like manual harvesting and field sorting.

The variety does not require specialized growth regulators, allowing for a lean and cost-effective management program. For operations that prioritize consistent supply throughout the season, Opal offers the necessary stability. Its ability to maintain structural integrity makes it a straightforward choice for growers who need a robust product that is easy to handle from field to market.
