Lettuce Elenas

Stability and Quality: Why Professionals Choose “Elenas”

The Iceberg lettuce is a demanding crop, particularly regarding growing conditions and disease resistance. The “Elenas” hybrid from the Dutch breeding company Rijk Zwaan was developed to address the needs of farmers seeking a balance between high yield and marketability. Unlike many varieties in this segment, this hybrid demonstrates exceptional head-forming stability even during temperature fluctuations.

Key Field Advantages

• Comprehensive Protection: Genetic resistance to downy mildew (Bremia), powdery mildew, and cucumber mosaic virus, making it ideal for open-field cultivation.
• Head Structure: Dense, heavy heads with an excellent internal structure, which reduces the risk of damage during transport.
• Versatility: The variety is adapted to various soil types, making it a predictable choice for farms with differing levels of agrotechnology.

Who is this hybrid for?

“Elenas” is perfectly suited for large-scale producers focused on retail chains. Thanks to its high disease resistance, growers can minimize chemical treatments, facilitating the production of vegetables that meet high environmental standards. A minor drawback is the necessity for strict adherence to planting density: if over-seeded, the heads may lose weight, so it is critical to follow Rijk Zwaan’s planting guidelines.

This hybrid is an investment in a “clean” harvest where every head meets the high quality standards expected of the Iceberg type: crunchiness, juiciness, and an aesthetically pleasing appearance, all without the need for excessive plant protection expenses.
