Smooth Brome 'Ingela': A Practical Solution for Forage Systems

The smooth brome (Bromus inermis) variety 'Ingela', originated by the Institute of Fodder and Agriculture (Іксгп Наан), serves as a cornerstone for livestock operations aiming to establish high-yielding, long-term grassland. With a plant height of 60–80 cm, this variety offers an ideal structural density, making it efficient for mechanical harvesting and optimized for multi-year usage.

Field Application and Farm Benefits

'Ingela' is widely utilized in modern Ukrainian agronomy to solve several critical farm management tasks:

• Long-term Pasture Establishment: Due to its exceptional resistance to trampling and grazing, the variety maintains productivity for 8–10 years, reducing the frequency and cost of re-seeding operations.
• Nutritious Haylage Production: The variety exhibits a favorable leaf-to-stem ratio, ensuring high protein content in harvested fodder, which is vital for improving livestock weight gain and milk production.
• Erosion Control: With its deep, fibrous root system, 'Ingela' is effectively used for slope stabilization and preventing wind-induced topsoil erosion on marginal lands.

Best Practices for Cultivation

The 'Ingela' variety is highly valued for its winter hardiness and rapid regrowth capacity after cutting or grazing. To maximize yields, agronomists recommend applying nitrogen fertilizers in early spring, which significantly accelerates biomass development. Integrating 'Ingela' into mixtures with legumes, such as alfalfa or clover, is highly recommended to improve the nutritional profile of the forage and utilize atmospheric nitrogen fixation, which benefits overall soil health. Proper seedbed preparation is essential to ensure consistent germination and successful establishment in the first growing season.
