The POSS 5 cotton variety belongs to the species Gossypium hirsutum L. and is characterized by a conical plant shape of medium height with palmately lobed leaves containing gossypolate glands and nectaries. The bolls are oval and of medium size, containing a medium amount of raw cotton (lint) and strong opening. The lint mass per boll is 5.2 g.

Cotton lint yield reaches 13.2–33.0 c/ga, while lint output is stably within the range of 38.0–38.9 %. Fiber length varies from 30.5 to 31.2 mm, and staple length ranges from 34.2 to 40.0 mm. The fiber is characterized by high strength: breaking load is 32.6 N, linear density is 165 tex. Fiber type – 2.

The plant's fertile period lasts about 125 days, and seed yield reaches 20.2 c/ga. The variety was not recorded as being affected by diseases and is recommended for cultivation in zones with an active temperature sum not lower than 32000 °C. It is suitable for a wide range of regions, including northern, central, chernozem, Ural, Western Siberian, and Far Eastern territories where climatic conditions favor its growth.
