Description ACADEMY
Hippeastrum hortorum – a representative of the amaryllis family, native to tropical America. In nature, there are about 75 species of this genus, however, they are all united under one species due to the similarity of morphological characteristics.

The hippeastrum bulb reaches a diameter of up to 20 cm and is only half submerged in the soil, which ensures plant stability. Strap-like leaves form a basal rosette about 50 cm long, creating a dense green cushion around the bulb.

Flowers are gathered in groups of 2–4 in a umbel inflorescence on a long scape up to 1 m. Tepals are wide (up to 20 cm) and have a bell shape, colored in various shades: white, pink, red, burgundy, yellow and variegated combinations. Large stamens with bright yellow anthers add to the decorativeness.

The flowering period falls in February – early March, which makes hippeastrum a popular choice for decorating spring interiors and gardens. Thanks to its large bulb, richly colored flowers and stable leaf structure, the plant is easy to grow both in open ground and in pots on balconies.
