The "Albatross" variety is a decorative and fruit-bearing shrub of the rose family (Chaenomeles), about 70–100 cm tall and up to 120 cm in crown diameter, making it compact and convenient for urban gardens. The shrub is characterized by straight, thornless branches, a dense crown, and dark green glossy leaves with oval stipules. Unlike larger varieties, "Albatross" maintains a low profile while possessing strong branching, ensuring a dense crown coverage.
Flowering occurs at the end of April to early May when the branches are still leafless. The fruits of this variety are round-ribbed, yellow-green in color, reach a diameter of 3–5 cm and weigh from 20 to 130 grams. The flesh is thin (0.5–1.6 cm), the fruits are juicy and taste like pineapple, especially at the end of the season when they become more bright orange.
"Albatross" is distinguished by its high resistance to drought and heat, as well as good frost hardiness, allowing it to be grown in all climate zones. The root system is fibrous and superficial, so the plant easily adapts to various types of garden soils, except for heavily chalky soils. Due to its compactness, decorative color, and edible fruits, the "Albatross" variety is an excellent choice for small urban gardens and household plots.
