Chaenomeles OGNIVO

Practical Guide to Growing Chaenomeles 'Ognivo'

The 'Ognivo' cultivar is a versatile choice, balancing aesthetic appeal with agricultural productivity. Developed by the N.V. Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden and Michurinsk State Agrarian University, this variety is engineered for resilience and reliability in Russian growing conditions.

Maintenance and Operations

Operating a site with 'Ognivo' requires an understanding of its growth patterns. It is a robust plant that resists most common diseases, keeping maintenance time relatively low. However, systematic pruning is non-negotiable. If left unchecked, the bush becomes excessively dense, which makes harvesting significantly more difficult due to the thorny nature of the stems. Investing in high-quality, heavy-duty gloves is a standard requirement for anyone managing these bushes.

Yield and Processing

The yellow-green fruits of 'Ognivo' are specifically valued for their culinary potential rather than raw consumption. Their technical characteristics make them stand out in processing:

• Compotes: Their high acidity and firm texture ensure that the fruit slices hold their shape during heat treatment, resulting in a clean, non-mushy final product.
• Jams: Due to a high natural pectin content, these fruits provide excellent gelling properties, eliminating the need for industrial thickeners.

For the operator, the high dry-matter content of the fruit ensures a good yield-to-processed-product ratio, making 'Ognivo' an economically sound choice for both small-scale home canning and larger batches.
