Origanum is a perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family, growing 40–70 cm tall, with egg-shaped leaves of matte-green color and soft bristly hairs. When crushed, the leaves release a strong and pleasant aroma, while the flowers are raspberry-pink, gathered in shield-like inflorescences that bloom from July to September.

In cooking, Origanum is valued as a seasoning for spaghetti, fish, meat, sauces, and salads. It is also added during salting and canning of dishes, while dried leaves are used for brewing tea, infusions, and decoctions. The oil obtained from the plant has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.

In folk medicine, Origanum is used as an expectorant for respiratory tract diseases, an appetite and digestion enhancer, and for treating gynecological problems. During flowering, the above-ground parts of the plant are collected to prepare tinctures and decoctions.
