When working with the 'Hillwood' cucumber from the Dutch breeder Wing Seed, you immediately notice a professional approach to plant physiology: the plant is highly predictable. As a generative type, it requires minimal pruning of excess foliage, which simplifies maintenance in large-scale glass greenhouse operations. Plant training is quick, and the lack of excessive vegetative mass saves valuable labor hours.

Operational Performance

The key advantage here is the parthenocarpic pollination type. In closed-ground conditions, this eliminates the need for bumblebees or hormonal treatments to induce fruit set. You simply plant the hybrid and secure high-quality fruit. The 15–20 cm fruit length is a 'gold standard' for retail, as the cucumbers fit perfectly into standard shipping crates without the need for complex sorting.

During our trial with 'Hillwood', the plant maintained excellent phytosanitary health. The resistance to powdery mildew and cucumber mosaic virus is not just a catalogue spec—it's a real-world reduction in fungicide input costs. When provided with the correct microclimate in a glass greenhouse, the plant maintains clean, healthy foliage until the very end of the cycle. With proper irrigation and nutrient scheduling, 'Hillwood' consistently delivers uniform, high-quality fruits, ensuring stable margins for the operation.
