Crested Wheatgrass IVOLOGINSKY 68

Field Performance of Ivolginsky 68 Crested Wheatgrass

When managing forage production in harsh continental climates, success depends on selecting varieties that balance resilience with nutritional output. The Ivolginsky 68 variety, developed by the Siberian Federal Scientific Center of Agrobiotechnologies RAS, is a reliable tool for establishing long-term pastures and hay fields in moisture-limited regions.

Operational Insights

From a farming perspective, Ivolginsky 68 is a low-maintenance, long-term asset. While the establishment phase in the first year requires patience—as the plant focuses on deep root development—the payoff arrives in subsequent seasons. By the second year, it forms a dense, aggressive sod that effectively suppresses weed encroachment, reducing the need for chemical or mechanical weeding.

• Drought Resilience: The variety exhibits exceptional tolerance to spring moisture deficits, ensuring a reliable crop even in difficult years.
• Feeding Value: Analysis of the forage shows excellent leaf-to-stem ratios during the heading stage, providing high digestibility for livestock.
• Harvesting Efficiency: The crop is well-suited for standard mowing equipment. It dries evenly in windrows, which simplifies hay processing and reduces the risk of nutrient leaching or mold during harvest windows.

The primary advantage for an operator is longevity. With proper grazing and cutting management, a stand of Ivolginsky 68 remains highly productive for up to 7–10 years. This significantly reduces annual operational costs, such as soil tillage, fuel consumption, and the recurring expense of purchasing seed, making it a sound investment for any livestock operation looking to minimize overhead without compromising feed quality.
