Wheatgrass STEPNOY

Field Performance of 'Stepnoy' Wheatgrass

For agricultural operators focusing on perennial forage crops, the 'Stepnoy' wheatgrass variety from SKFNATS (North-Caucasus Federal Agricultural Research Center) offers a reliable and robust solution for arid and semi-arid conditions. Developed by breeders V.A. Kravtsov and V.V. Kravtsov, this variety is engineered for consistent growth patterns and high-quality biomass, making it a dependable asset for livestock feed security.

Key Operational Characteristics

The height of the stand, ranging from 40 to 120 cm, is optimized for efficient mechanical harvesting. From an operator’s perspective, 'Stepnoy' stands out due to its operational simplicity and durability:

• High Regrowth Potential: Following the first cut, the variety displays excellent regrowth (oṭavnost), allowing for multiple harvests within a single season, which directly optimizes cost per ton of forage.
• Climate Resilience: It performs exceptionally well in dry steppe environments where other grasses might fail. Its winter hardiness ensures that the field remains productive year after year without the need for frequent reseeding.
• Versatile Usage: While primarily used for hay production, the dense sod allows for managed grazing, providing the operator with flexibility in resource allocation.

Maintenance and Agronomics

Managing 'Stepnoy' is straightforward. Once established, the grass forms a dense, uniform cover that effectively suppresses weed competition. For the owner, this translates to lower maintenance costs and less time spent on field interventions. The plant's ability to withstand environmental stress means it requires minimal inputs while delivering a consistent feed product. Whether used for haymaking or controlled grazing, this wheatgrass variety provides the stability and longevity that modern farms require to maintain a steady forage supply in challenging climates.
