Elymus 'Ozernensky' is a perennial grass variety registered in 2009 and developed by the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Irrigation of Vegetables and Melon Cultivation. It belongs to the genus Elymus and is distinguished by high drought tolerance and adaptability to arid conditions.
The variety is characterized by straight, thin stems up to 120 cm in height, with leaves that are usually rolled, featuring a hairy upper surface and a smooth lower surface. Flowers are gathered in sessile spikes, forming dense glumes; the fruit is a caryopsis, ripening in August–September. Due to its structure, Elymus 'Ozernensky' easily adapts to various soil and climatic conditions, including weakly saline and eroded soils.
Agronomic advantages include high dry matter yield: experimental studies note 3.1 ± 0.1 t/ha with optimal sowing using a disc + row seed drill at a depth of 5 cm. When processing soil across the slope of the Bera hill, yield indicators reach 2.4 ± 0.1 t/ha. These data confirm the variety's effectiveness for land restoration subject to desertification, as well as its suitability as a pasture and hay crop.
Elymus 'Ozernensky' is widely used in agriculture as a fodder plant: it provides good green mass (300–330 kg/ha) and hay (30–35 kg/ha), and also contains a significant amount of protein. Due to its drought resistance, low fertilizer requirements, and ability to quickly recover after mowing, this variety is suitable for cultivation in all agricultural zones of the country.
