Wheatgrass ABAKAN

Resilience for Extreme Climates

The «Abakan» couch grass variety, developed by the Khakassia Research Institute of Agricultural Problems, is a specialized solution designed for regions with harsh, unstable climates. Unlike wild relatives, this variety provides consistent yields and predictable biomass production even in areas where traditional forage crops struggle with winterkilling or extreme drought.

Agronomic Profile

«Abakan» is characterized by its significant height, reaching 90–100 cm. This robust growth habit makes it an excellent candidate for both grazing and high-quality hay production. The variety demonstrates strong regrowth capacity, ensuring multiple cuts throughout the season without substantial loss of vigor.

Key Advantages and Considerations

• Hardiness: Excellent resistance to both severe winters and prolonged drought, allowing it to maintain high nutritional value even under environmental stress.
• Longevity: As a perennial forage, «Abakan» maintains field stability for many years, significantly reducing long-term reseeding costs.
• Soil Preference: It thrives on loamy and chestnut soils; however, as with most couch grass varieties, it is best suited for well-drained environments and does not tolerate waterlogging.

For agricultural operations located in risky farming zones, «Abakan» serves as a foundational crop to secure a stable forage supply. It is the ideal choice for producers who prioritize long-term field endurance and minimal maintenance, offering a perfect balance between wild-grass resilience and domesticated productivity.
