DescriptionCHULYSKIY
Creeping bentgrass (Elytrigia repens L.) – a perennial rhizomatous weed from the Grass family, widely distributed in agricultural lands and garden plots. Its characteristic features include an erect stem 40 to 120 cm tall, a smooth cylindrical surface, as well as narrow linear leaves with pointed tips and hairy sheaths. The root system is creeping and deep: long rhizomes can reach lengths up to 1.5 m, from which new shoots easily regenerate.
Creeping bentgrass creates a dense turf cover, which makes soil processing difficult and leads to strong competition for moisture, nitrogen, and light. As a result, crop yields may decrease by up to 40%. Rapid reproduction is manifested in the fact that more than 50 new shoots can develop from one meter of rhizome.
To prevent and combat creeping bentgrass, it is recommended to observe strict crop rotation, carry out deep autumn plowing and cultivation during the active growth of the weed. Intercultural operations help limit the spread of rhizomes. Destruction methods include mechanical removal of rhizomes, mulching, or the use of a black fallow, as well as chemical herbicides if necessary. These measures allow effective control of creeping bentgrass growth and maintain the yield of agricultural crops.
