Description Lyubava
Lubava is a medium-early Ukrainian variety of large-fruited cherry, developed by breeders L.I. Taranko and A.A. Kyschak at the Artemivsk Experimental Station of the Institute of Horticulture of Ukraine. The variety was included in the State Register of Plants in 2007 and is characterized by high winter hardiness, tolerating temperatures down to -26.1°C. The tree is medium-sized with a dense, round, and well-branched crown, beginning to bear fruit on the 4th–5th year after planting. Flowering occurs in mid-season, and the fruiting period falls in the third decade of June to the first decade of July.

The fruits of the Lubava variety are large, weighing 8–10 grams, heart-shaped with a bright amber-red blush on a shiny yellow skin. They are resistant to cracking and easily detach from the stems. The flesh is light yellow, firm, juicy, and slightly fibrous, with a very pleasant sweet taste, confirmed by a high sensory evaluation of 4.7 points. The stone is medium-sized and easily separates from the flesh, making the fruits convenient for fresh consumption and processing.

The variety exhibits high resistance to diseases, drought tolerance, and excellent transportability, making it versatile for various cultivation conditions and uses. Lubava cherries are recommended for planting on fertile, moisture-retentive, and well-drained soils protected from north winds. Annual shaping pruning is required, carried out in spring before bud break. The fruits are suitable not only for fresh consumption but also for making jams, liqueurs, and juices, highlighting the variety’s versatility and high quality.
