Melitopol Black Cherry — one of the leading industrial varieties in Ukraine, developed at the Melitopol Institute of Irrigated Horticulture. This medium-late variety ripens in southern regions of the country between June 15 and 22. The tree is medium-sized, fast-growing, with a spreading, dense, rounded crown. Fruits are large, single-seeded, weighing 8–10 grams, oval-shaped, dark red in color, turning almost black and glossy at full maturity. The skin is thin and firm, the flesh is dark red, dense, juicy, and slightly fibrous, with a rich sweet flavor and pleasant acidity. The stone is small, round, and easily separates from the flesh.
The variety is characterized by high yield — about 100 kg per tree — as well as good transportability and versatility in use. Cherries are suitable for fresh consumption, canning, and dessert preparation. The tree exhibits high cold tolerance and disease resistance, including moniliosis, making it a reliable choice for gardeners. However, the variety is self-sterile and requires pollinators, among which the recommended varieties are Surprise, Bigaro of Oratovsky, Large-fruited, Droghana Yellow, and Valeriy Chkalov.
For successful cultivation, trees should be planted in sunny locations with fertile soil, regular watering during dry periods, and fertilization with organic and mineral fertilizers in spring and autumn. Pruning helps develop the crown and improve yield. Due to its qualities and adaptability, Melitopol Black Cherry is a popular choice for both industrial orchards and private plots.
