Celery Jupiter

Technical Profile: 'Jupiter' Root Celery

The 'Jupiter' celery variety by Sedek is a mid-to-late root type cultivar, specifically bred for long-term storage and the production of high-quality, uniform root vegetables. From an agrotechnical perspective, this variety is defined by a strict vegetation period ranging from 140 to 160 days from transplanting to reaching technical maturity.

Biological Development and Root Characteristics

The primary engineering goal of this variety is to achieve efficient biomass accumulation while maintaining high pulp density. 'Jupiter' develops a round root vegetable with minimal lateral root branching, which significantly streamlines post-harvest cleaning and processing. Key technical parameters include:

• Plant Type: Medium-height compact leaf rosette, designed for effective photosynthesis without excessive shading of the crown.
• Root System: Robust, requiring consistent irrigation and soil aeration to facilitate optimal mass gain.
• Pulp Structure: Dense, white, and resistant to pithiness, maintaining structural integrity through both thermal processing and extended winter storage.

Agronomic Utility and Cultivation Requirements

The genetic potential established by the originators (S.V. Dubinin, I.N. Dubinina, A.N. Lukyanenko) allows for consistent yields even in moderate climates. Given the extensive growing season, professional cultivation relies on nursery-grown transplants, with seeds typically sown in March to build a vigorous root system before field establishment. Planting density must be carefully managed to ensure uniform root development and prevent deformation.

For commercial farming, 'Jupiter' is particularly valued for its superior storability, making it an excellent choice for markets requiring supply through the winter and early spring months. Adhering to strict irrigation regimes during the root enlargement phase is the critical factor in ensuring high marketable output and consistent vegetable quality.
