Leaf Cabbage "Smak": The Optimal Choice for Fresh Market Logistics

The "Smak" variety, developed by the Russian seed company "Sedek," represents a specialized approach to leafy cabbage cultivation. Unlike bulk-heavy heading varieties, "Smak" focuses on culinary quality and portion-controlled harvesting, making it a high-demand item for specialty produce suppliers.

Field Application and Market Positioning

With a head weight ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 kg, "Smak" is engineered to solve common logistics issues for small to medium-scale growers. Key scenarios for its professional use include:

• High-Density Planting: Due to its compact growth habit, farmers can maximize plant population per hectare, increasing yields in intensive production systems.
• Fresh Market Retail: The signature gray-green color and manageable size make it an excellent choice for modern retail, where consumers prefer smaller, "single-meal" portions rather than large heads.
• Culinary Versatility: The leaves provide a soft, non-fibrous texture, highly valued by chefs for high-end salads and delicate cabbage rolls.

The breeding program led by A.N. Lukyanenko, S.V. Dubinin, and I.N. Dubinina has created a plant that performs consistently under typical growing conditions. For the commercial farmer, "Smak" serves as a rapid-turnover crop. It is not intended for long-term storage, which encourages a business model focused on "farm-to-table" speed—delivering the harvest immediately after reaching the target weight to ensure maximum freshness and profitability.
