Sumchanka

The 'Sumchanka' buckwheat variety is an early-maturing and high-yielding variety, recommended for cultivation in forest-steppe and steppe zones, particularly in the Sumy region and other areas of Ukraine. Developed in 1985, this variety is characterized by high resistance to diseases, lodging, and shattering, as well as drought tolerance, making it a reliable choice for various climatic conditions. The vegetation period lasts 65-75 days, which is 7-8 days earlier than other varieties such as Krupinka, Ivanova, and Ukrayinka.

Plants of the 'Sumchanka' variety reach a height of 85-90 cm, with well-branched, anthocyanin-stained stems. Inflorescences are formed as spikes, mostly single, but sometimes double or triple. Leaves are broad, and the fruits are large, winged, with color ranging from light brown to dark brown. The thousand-grain weight is 29-31 g, with a hull content of 19-20%, and a kernel density of 630-640 g/l. Kernel uniformity reaches 90-95%, with a grain yield of 75-80%, and protein content of 15-16%, placing this variety among the highest-quality buckwheat varieties.

For sowing, the recommended seeding rate is 3.0-3.5 million viable seeds per hectare for row planting and 1.5-2.0 million for wide-row planting. Seeds have good germination and germinate quickly at soil temperatures from +10°C to +15°C, making early spring the optimal planting time. The variety is suitable for both commercial and home cultivation, ensuring a stable and high yield of buckwheat with excellent taste qualities.
