Peppermint basil, represented by the variety "Rosi", is an annual herbaceous plant with a medium-early maturity period, originating from the Netherlands. This variety is distinguished by its high versatility under growing conditions, resistance to high temperatures, shade tolerance, and the ability to withstand drought with sufficient moisture levels. "Rosi" basil bushes are strongly branched, reaching heights from 40 to 60 centimeters, with large, dense leaves of deep purple color and serrated edges. The leaves and stems contain a large amount of essential oils, giving the plant a rich peppery aroma with hints of lemon, anise, and a slight bitterness in taste. This variety retains the dark color of the leaves better than many other purple basil varieties, without having green speckles.
Basil is widely used in cooking both fresh and dried, as well as for pickling and salting. Young shoots and leaves are valued not only for their taste qualities but also for therapeutic and prophylactic properties due to the content of essential oils, vitamins (C, A, PP, group B), camphor, rutin, and other biologically active substances. The aroma of peppermint basil helps to repel insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and thrips, making it a useful component in the garden and contributing to the improvement of growth and taste of neighboring plants, such as tomatoes, asparagus, oregano, and peppers.
In addition to the "Rosi" variety, there are mixes of basil with various taste nuances and color ranges, including classic spicy, lemon, anise, cinnamon, and peppery flavors. The leaves of such plants can be green, purple, or violet, which adds decorative value.
