Barley Teren

Engineering the Immune Profile of Winter Barley

The 'Teren' variety, developed by the Vinnytsia State Agricultural Research Station, is a specialized six-row winter barley designed to maintain photosynthetic capacity under high infection pressure. The technical value of this genotype lies in its comprehensive resistance to a broad spectrum of pathogens, which is critical for regions with high precipitation and humidity.

Phytosanitary Defense Architecture

The core advantage of 'Teren' is its genetically encoded resistance to diseases that typically degrade yield in intensive cropping systems. The breeding process specifically focused on blocking the primary infection pathways for:

• Mycosphaerella leaf spot and brown blotch;
• Rhynchosporium and powdery mildew;
• Various rust species.

These biological solutions allow growers to optimize fungicide programs by shifting the focus from crisis management to preventative control, significantly reducing the reliance on aggressive chemical treatments during the stem elongation phase.

Resistance to Viral Load

Special consideration has been given to shielding the crop against viral pathogens transmitted by insect vectors. 'Teren' exhibits robust tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) and mosaic viruses. In scenarios of early-autumn aphid migration, the plant's biological barrier prevents systemic infection, preserving the potential for tiller development and grain filling. The combination of a six-row spike type and this level of resistance ensures the crop reaches its yield potential even under adverse phytosanitary conditions.
