Barley SU Midnight

Genetic Defense: Why «ZU Midnight» Leads in the Field

The six-row winter barley «ZU Midnight» from the German breeding house W. von Borries-Eckendorf & Co.KG is a precision tool for agronomists prioritizing harvest predictability under extreme conditions. The key feature of this variety lies in its maximum winter hardiness rating (9 out of 9), which is critical for regions with unstable snow cover and sharp temperature fluctuations.

Biological Robustness as an Economic Foundation

The breeding of «ZU Midnight» is built upon a multi-level pathogen defense system. Breeders focused on disrupting the infection cycle of the most dangerous barley diseases:

• Comprehensive Immunity: The variety demonstrates high resistance to Mycosphaerella leaf spot and brown leaf spot, preventing premature senescence of the leaf apparatus and maintaining photosynthetic activity until grain filling.
• Anti-Viral Strategy: A high level of genetic resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and other viral diseases mitigates risks associated with insect vectors (aphids, leafhoppers).
• Fungal Resilience: The plant exhibits excellent resistance to rust and powdery mildew, even under high infection pressure.

In practical terms, this means reduced reliance on fungicide treatments: less crop stress and lower chemical protection costs. The six-row spike type ensures a high density of productive tillers, which, combined with a robust root system, allows the variety to efficiently exploit the soil profile and realize its yield potential even in moderate-fertility soils. «ZU Midnight» is a pragmatic choice for those seeking the optimal balance between crop security and operational efficiency.
