When producing silage, the primary goal for any farm is feed digestibility and energy concentration. Limagrain’s LG31233, with its dent-type grain, provides a high-quality silage base that cattle really benefit from. Coming from French breeding programs, this hybrid brings a level of consistency that I find essential for predictable farm management.

Field Performance and Plant Health

In the field, LG31233 is a workhorse. Its resistance to common corn smut and, more importantly, its natural tolerance to the European corn borer (Sesamia species) significantly reduces my stress and costs related to pesticide application. During wet seasons, the hybrid’s resistance to Fusarium is a game changer, keeping the stalks standing strong until the harvester passes. Less lodging means fewer harvest losses and cleaner silage in the bunk.

Flexibility in Seeding Rates

What I appreciate most is the flexibility in seeding rates. Depending on the soil fertility and moisture levels, I can adjust the density anywhere from 45,000 to 75,000 plants per hectare:

• On high-yield patches, I push to 70-75k plants per hectare to maximize tonnage.
• On more challenging fields, I drop to 45-55k to ensure each plant gets enough nutrients and water to reach its full potential.

With a maturity cycle of 120-140 days, this hybrid fits perfectly into our harvest schedule. Because Limagrain genetics are consistent, the plants mature uniformly, ensuring the entire field hits the optimal moisture level for ensiling at the same time. It’s a reliable, low-maintenance choice for any silage operation.
