Barley Odeskyi 170

Engineering High Yields: The Genetics of Odeskyi 170

Developed by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (NCSS), this variety is a specialized tool for winter cropping in southern regions. The key feature of this six-row barley is its ear architecture, optimized for intensive grain filling. The increased number of rows requires high photosynthetic potential, which this variety delivers through its balanced leaf blade structure.

Biological Defense: Phytosanitary Properties

The variety's resilience is based on the multi-layer inhibition of pathogens. Unlike standard varieties, the focus here is on blocking fungal infections within the vascular system:

• Fungicidal Immunity: Genetic resistance to net blotch and brown spot minimizes the need for additional fungicide applications during the stem elongation phase.
• Rust Resistance: Dwarf rust and mycosphaerella leaf spot, which can reduce the 1000-grain weight by 30%, struggle to penetrate the tissues of this specific variety.
• Powdery Mildew Control: Leaf density and cuticle thickness prevent mycelium development even under high humidity conditions during the spring season.

Operational Significance

The breeder has engineered Odeskyi 170 for high adaptability regarding planting dates. The six-row ear type makes this barley essential for enterprises aiming for maximum yield per hectare. Its high tillering energy ensures that the crop emerges from winter dormancy with a full stand, effectively mitigating the risks of crop thinning following severe winter temperatures.
