Krechet

Krechet is a barley variety developed using biotechnology at the NPO 'Podmoskovye', characterized by high yield and adaptability to various agroclimatic conditions. It belongs to the nutans variety and is distinguished by medium-length and dense spikes, large grains with a 1000-grain weight ranging from 45 to 54 grams, and high protein content (11–15%). The straw height is 60–80 cm, with the variety exhibiting high resistance to lodging and breakage, as well as increased bushiness. Krechet is a medium-maturing variety, ripening simultaneously with such varieties as Gonar, Veresk, and Sonet.

The variety shows high resistance to several diseases, including powdery mildew, tan spot, helminthosporiosis, and root rots, making it a reliable choice for agricultural producers. However, it has low resistance to rust and powdery mildew. The yield of the variety on trial plots in the Perm Krai between 1991–1995 ranged from 28.3 to 47.3 centners per hectare, slightly lagging behind the best regional varieties. Krechet is included in the State Register of Russia and is recommended for cultivation in several regions of the country.

Additionally, the variety demonstrates high resistance to imidazolinones and sulfonylureas, allowing its effective use in various agroclimatic zones, including steppes and foothills. It shows stable performance under both drought and excessive moisture conditions, exhibiting high drought and stress tolerance. The optimal planting density is 55–60 thousand plants per hectare, with plant height reaching 170–180 cm. Krechet also features high malt extraction (48%) and good flavor qualities, making it in demand for the brewing industry and other applications.
