BYIYAN

Byiyan is a mid-maturing spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety intended for use in the brewing, food, and fodder industries. The plant is of medium height with a semi-erect bush, featuring a pyramidal, cylindrical, loose spike of medium density with a distinct waxy bloom. The grain is large, with a non-glabrous ventral furrow and embracing lodicules. The mass of 1000 grains varies from 39 to 54 grams, indicating high seed quality. The variety belongs to the submedicure type and is characterized by resistance to powdery mildew, root rot, stem rust, loose smut, as well as lodging and drought.

The vegetative period of the Byiyan variety ranges from 67 to 80 days, making it considered mid-early or mid-maturing depending on growing conditions. Plant height varies from 61 to 80.7 cm, ensuring optimal tillering and resistance to lodging. Grain density reaches 597 g/l, indicating high grain density and quality. Protein content in the grain can reach up to 12.4%, making the variety attractive for fodder purposes and the food industry.

In terms of yield, the Byiyan variety demonstrates high performance: in the Central Black Earth region, the average yield is about 46.8 c/ha, in the North Caucasus — 27.6 c/ha, and in the Middle Volga region — 32.3 c/ha. During multi-year studies, the variety outperformed standards in yield, reaching 2.45 t/ha, which is 0.68 t/ha higher than benchmark values. Due to its agronomic characteristics and resistance to adverse factors, the Byiyan variety is a promising choice for cultivation in various regions with different climatic conditions.
