PLATON RENET

"Platon Renet" is a winter variety with a late ripening period, described and introduced into culture by the famous Ukrainian pomologist Lev Platonovich Simirenko in honor of his father, Platon Fedorovich Simirenko. Trees of this variety are strong-growing with a wide, round, and dense canopy that requires annual pruning to maintain its shape. The tree bears fruit on various parts of the canopy starting from the 4-5th year after planting on semi-dwarf rootstocks. The variety is self-sterile, so the presence of other apple varieties is recommended for successful pollination. "Platon Renet" fruits are large, weighing from 150 to 190 grams, round-conical or flat-round in shape, sometimes with deformities. The skin is smooth, shiny, green in color, with numerous light subcutaneous dots and characteristic warty formations with an rusty surface up to 7 mm in diameter. In southern regions, a crimson blush may appear on the fruits. The flesh is white with a green tint, dense, very juicy, aromatic, with a harmonious sweet-and-sour taste and a pleasant spicy aftertaste, which gives the fruits high dessert qualities. The variety is characterized by high yield and excellent keeping qualities of fruits, making it popular for cultivation in Ukraine, especially in the western Forest-steppe and steppe zone, where apples achieve their best taste qualities. Trees have good frost resistance, however, young shoots may be damaged by severe frosts on waterlogged soils. The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and scab, so timely preventive fungicide treatment is recommended to preserve plant health and crop quality.
