The Red Chief apple variety is a late-winter, high-yielding variety developed in the USA as a clone of the popular Red Delicious variety. The trees are medium-sized, reaching heights of 3-3.5 meters, with a compact rounded canopy, which allows for denser planting. The variety is early-bearing, with fruit production beginning as early as the third year after planting, especially when grown on the semi-dwarfing rootstock 54-118, which promotes rapid growth and early fruiting. Red Chief apple trees are distinguished by high resistance to powdery mildew and bacterial burn, though they have medium or low resistance to scab.

The fruits are large, weighing from 180 to 400 grams, elongated-conical in shape with bright red coloration and five bumps on the top. The flesh is light with a greenish tint, dense, juicy, and aromatic, with a distinct sweet taste and a light wine-like note. The surface of the apples is covered with a dense translucent wax coating, giving them an attractive appearance. Harvest maturity occurs at the end of September, and consumer readiness is from November to December; meanwhile, the fruits store well until spring without the use of special equipment, maintaining their taste and commercial qualities for eight months.
