The Vavilov apple is a triploid, high-yielding winter variety with immunity to scab. The trees are of medium size with a rounded crown of medium density; the main branches are curved and branch off the trunk at an angle close to 90 degrees, which facilitates formative pruning. Shoots are of medium thickness, zigzagged, round in cross-section, and brown in color with pubescence. The variety is characterized by high winter hardiness, making it suitable for cultivation in various climatic conditions, including the Central Chernozem region and the Oryol region.
The fruits of the Vavilov variety are large, weighing about 170 grams, depressed-spherical in shape with a smooth surface, broad-ribbed and oblique. The base color of the fruits at harvest is greenish-yellow, turning light yellow at consumer maturity. The skin color consists of blurred stripes of brownish-red, covering about half of the fruit surface. The flesh is greenish, dense, fine-grained, and very juicy, with a tart-sweet taste and a weak aroma.
The variety is characterized by regular and high yields, reaching 26 tons per hectare. Harvest maturity begins on September 20, while the consumer period lasts from late September to early March, ensuring long-term storage and usage. Thanks to the combination of high productivity, disease resistance, and winter hardiness, the Vavilov apple is an excellent choice for gardeners aiming to obtain high-quality and tasty apples in temperate climates.
