Description DELICIOUS
Actinidia is a fruit-bearing vine that can grow up to 4–5 meters tall and develop both as a bush and as long canes that wrap around supports. For successful growth, the plant needs strong support: arches, pergolas, netting, or grape trellises. Netting is particularly useful because it securely fixes the canes and promotes even growth in all directions; it is important to guide new shoots toward the supports and tie them in early spring to avoid chaotic tangling.

Actinidia fruiting begins about 3 years after planting. The plant is dioecious: female varieties bear fruit, male varieties only pollinate, and self-fertile options also exist. To get a harvest, place one male bush near 6–8 female ones; it is important to choose plants of the same species (arguta, kolomikta, polygama, deliciosa). The fruits resemble mini-kiwis: they are large, a rich burgundy-purple color, and contain a high amount of vitamin C and ascorbic acid. The average fruit weight is 15–18 g, and a mature plant can yield 5–10 kg of harvest.

Actinidia prefers sunny spots for fruit ripening but tolerates shade and moderate frosts (down to –25 °C in some varieties). The plant is not demanding regarding soil: it grows best on fertile, well-drained soils, not on alkaline or clay soils with a high water table. Planting near buildings is safe because actinidia does not have aerial roots. Blooming occurs in late June–early July, lasts about three weeks, and the aroma resembles jasmine and attracts cats. After flowering, fruits appear on the vine, ripening in mid-September to early October.

To maintain high yield, strict pruning is required annually: shaping the bush to a height of 170–200 cm, usually fan-shaped with 3–4 shoots. This technique allows controlling growth and ensures optimal fruit lighting. Thanks to its decorative appeal and useful fruits, actinidia is becoming a popular choice for decorating gazebos, pergolas, and other garden structures.
