Actinidia is a perennial vine that grows wonderfully in semi-shaded and sunny places due to its affinity for light. The plant reaches a height of 40 to 60 cm, has green leaves with serrated edges and reddish shoots that easily attach to trellises, walls, or fences. Thanks to its climbing growth, it is ideal for vertical greening, creating a living fence or a decorative element on a porch.
Actinidia fruits are oval berries with smooth green skin and a sweet taste resembling kiwi. Inside the berries are small seeds surrounded by tender pulp, and in the center lies fragrant juice rich in vitamin C. Fruits begin to ripen in September–October, and the first berries appear on the plant in the third year. Thanks to self-fertility, the plant ensures its own pollination and high yield.
For successful cultivation, Actinidia requires nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with a neutral reaction; it does not tolerate water stagnation. The plant is frost-hardy, although young plants (1–2 years) are better covered with film during the cold season. Care includes regular tying of shoots to supports, pruning to maintain shape, and propagation by seeds or vegetatively. Actinidia is distinguished by its resistance to pollution and diseases, making it a reliable choice as both a decorative and fruiting plant.
