Cussonia

Cussonia is a genus of trees and shrubs belonging to the Araliaceae family, native to the African continent. These plants are widely known as cabbage trees and are characterized by their thick, succulent stems and large, compound leaves arranged in striking apical rosettes.

In terms of origin, they are predominantly found in the grasslands and scrublands of South Africa. Their botanical evolution has adapted them to survive in environments with high solar radiation and periodic water shortages, utilizing their woody stems for moisture storage.

Climate requirements for Cussonia involve warm conditions with plenty of direct sunlight. As a frost-intolerant plant, it is typically cultivated in containers, allowing for indoor overwintering in regions with cold winters, ensuring that temperatures do not drop below the critical threshold.

For optimal growth, the soil must be highly porous and well-draining. A mix consisting of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite is recommended to mimic the stony conditions of their natural habitat and prevent root asphyxiation during the growth cycle.

Watering practices are essential for the plant's health. During the active growth season, water should be applied moderately once the top layer of soil has dried out completely. In winter, during dormancy, irrigation should be significantly reduced to allow the plant a resting period.
