The bulbs should be planted at a depth of three times their height, generally 12–15 cm. Spacing between bulbs should be kept at 10–15 cm to promote airflow and prevent moisture accumulation.

For industrial greenhouse forcing, bulbs are placed in controlled environments at 5–9°C for 10–12 weeks to simulate winter dormancy and trigger floral initiation.

Propagation is primarily achieved through natural offsets (bulbils) formed on the basal plate. Techniques such as scooping or scoring the basal plate are employed in commercial cultivation to increase offset yield.

Hyacinth (Hyacinthus) is a genus of bulbous perennial plants in the family Asparagaceae. The genus is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Western and Central Asia.

The crop thrives in sunny locations protected from strong winds. Shade causes etiolation, resulting in weak, elongated stems that often require mechanical support.

Well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter is essential. Heavy clay soils must be amended with sand or aggregate to ensure proper drainage and prevent waterlogging.

A neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH of 6.5–7.5 is ideal. Highly acidic soils inhibit root growth and increase the susceptibility of the bulb to pathogens.

Groundwater levels must remain at least 60–80 cm below the surface. Excessive moisture around the bulb base during the growing season is the primary cause of rot.

The most devastating disease is yellow bacterial rot, characterized by the decay of the bulb tissue into a foul-smelling, slimy mass. Infected bulbs must be destroyed immediately.

Fungal pathogens such as Penicillium and Botrytis (grey mold) frequently infect stored bulbs if humidity levels are not properly managed or if the ventilation is insufficient.

Pests like the bulb mite and the narcissus bulb fly cause mechanical damage to the basal plate, creating entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections.

Effective management includes pre-planting fungicide treatments and rigorous inspection of the planting material to eliminate symptomatic bulbs.

Crop rotation is a critical agronomic practice. Avoid planting hyacinths in the same plot for at least 4–5 years to reduce the soil-borne pathogen load.

Harvesting should take place once the foliage has turned yellow and withered, indicating that the bulb has completed its nutrient storage cycle for the dormant period.

After excavation, bulbs should be cleaned of soil and debris, then cured in a well-ventilated, shaded area at temperatures between 20–25°C for several weeks.

Storage requires precise temperature control. The initial period should be warm, followed by a cooler phase to ensure the maturation of the floral bud inside the bulb.

Regular monitoring during storage is necessary to identify and remove any bulbs showing signs of rot, preventing the spread of diseases within the storage bins.

High-quality bulbs for market should be firm, clean, and free of any discoloration, mechanical injuries, or evidence of pest or disease infestation.
