The biological cycle of ortheziids is notable for the continued mobility of females throughout their development. Unlike many other scale insects that remain sessile after settling, female ortheziids move periodically to find new feeding sites, which facilitates their spread across the host plant.
Feeding occurs by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, which weakens the plant significantly. The infestation is often accompanied by the secretion of honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of fungus hinders photosynthesis and creates an unsightly appearance, leading to yellowing and stunted growth.
