Praelongorthezia is a genus of insects within the Ortheziidae family, belonging to the Coccoidea superfamily. These insects are characterized by their unique wax plates that cover their bodies, providing significant protection against predators and chemicals.

The adult female is generally sessile and possesses an oval body. The most recognizable feature is the white or cream-colored wax that forms a dorsal ridge, often making them look like small bits of fluff or cotton stuck to the plant.

Nymphs, commonly known as crawlers, are the primary mobile stage. They are extremely small and easily dispersed by wind, water, or human intervention between different plants in a garden or greenhouse.

Males are rarely observed; they are winged, transient, and do not feed. Their sole purpose is to locate females for mating, and they are seldom seen by growers who are usually only concerned with the stationary female colonies.

Taxonomically, they are distinct from mealybugs due to the specific structure of their wax ovisacs, which are often more rigid and clearly defined compared to the loose secretions of other coccids.

What it damages

Praelongorthezia primarily attacks a variety of ornamental plants, fruit trees, and shrubs. They tend to congregate in high-density colonies on younger, succulent shoots and the undersides of leaves.

The damage is caused by piercing and sucking the plant's sap. This removal of essential nutrients causes stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of young branches or even entire specimens.

These insects produce large amounts of honeydew, a sticky sugary secretion. This substance provides an ideal substrate for the growth of sooty mold, which effectively blocks photosynthesis by covering the leaf surface in a black, powdery film.

Control measures
