The fungus produces spores known as conidia, which are easily disseminated by wind and splashing water. These spores germinate on the surface of potato leaves and invade the plant tissue.

Taxonomically, the fungus is classified within the family Mycosphaerellaceae. Its biological cycle is highly adapted to the growth phases of solanaceous crops.

The pathogen primarily overwinters as mycelium or conidia within crop debris left in the field. During the growing season, it rapidly infects new plant growth under favorable moist conditions.
