MEDICUM 157

MEDICUM 157 is a mid-early spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety intended for grain forage use. The plant is medium tall, with a height of 56 to 70 cm, and has an erect or semi-erect bush. The ear is cylindrical and loose, with long smooth awns, and the kernel is large, yellow, with an unhairy ventral groove and frontal lodicule. The weight of 1000 grains ranges from 42 to 54 grams, which indicates high seed quality. The growing period lasts for 64-81 days, allowing this variety to ripen 5-6 days earlier than standard varieties Priazovsky 9 and Vikont, as well as 2-3 days earlier than the Stranik variety. The variety is resistant to loose smut but susceptible to covered smut and helminthosporiosis. MEDICUM 157's drought resistance exceeds that of Priazovsky 9 by 1-2 points, making it a reliable choice for regions with variable moisture levels. Lodging resistance is slightly lower than that of Vikont and Ataman varieties, but the variety demonstrates stable yields. The average yield is 35.5 tons/ha in the Central Black Earth Region and 24.0 tons/ha in the North Caucasus, which is 2.4 tons/ha higher than the average standard. The maximum yield recorded in the Kursk region reached 66.4 tons/ha. MEDICUM 157 was developed by FSBSI «Federal Rostov Agrarian Scientific Center» and FSBSI «Samara Research Institute of Agriculture» based on hybridization of varieties Odeskyy 163 and Odeskyy 111 x Prairie. The variety is included in the state register and recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth Region and North Caucasus region. Due to its high protein content (from 11.7% to 16.7%) and qualitative seed parameters, it is widely used for feed production. MEDICUM 157 seeds are available in big-bag packaging of about 500 kg and in bulk, which is convenient for farmers.
